Ocular Migraine
An ocular migraine is mostly suffered by those people who suffer from a normal migraine headache. Ocular migraine is another name for migraine with aura where the person experiences visual sensations that are strange but it is not necessary that these sensations will be followed by headache. It takes place in only one eye and when the ocular migraine begins the person may feel that he has developed some problem with his sight. The migraine begins with a small spot in the eye which may increase in size and obstruct the vision in patches.
If the problem continues the spot that has expanded will have colored borders or zigzag lines on the border or may even give a shimmering effect. This feeling may continue for some minutes and the distortion starts spreading from the center of the eye to the outer portion of the eye. The whole distorted feeling can disappear within fifteen to thirty minutes. Some of the sufferers may develop a headache and some may not experience any kind of pain but all the people who suffer from ocular migraine feel very tired after the problem disappears.
Causes and Duration of Ocular Migraine
Even today the exact cause of an ocular migraine has not been discovered but it is believed that this migraine is caused by an extraordinary kind of stimulation that takes place behind the brain in the nerves present in that area. In the common migraine the blood supply to the brain is obstructed while in ocular migraine the blood supply is obstructed to the area in the brain that controls the vision due to which the problem occurs in the eye. The recurrence period of ocular migraine is not fixed. It may recur within short intervals or may recur after a long time.
Some of the people who suffer from ocular migraine may also experience pre-indications like extra sensitivity towards sound and light which is a warning signal that they may go through an ocular migraine. It is not necessary that all people who suffer from this will also get these warning signals.
The best way to get relief from this problem is to consult a neurologist so that the other problems that normally follow ocular migraine can be avoided.
