Basilar Migraine
Basilar Migraine is also known as basilar artery migraine which is a very rare type of migraine that occurs at the back portion of the head. It is the typical kind of headache that has symptoms which are commonly not found in other types of migraines.
The person suffering from basilar migraine often has symptoms like visual disturbances, severe vertigo and finds difficulty in walking. The visual disturbance does not mean the auras but these are different types as the person may have blurred visions or temporary loss of sight during the attack.
This visual disturbance is caused because the artery that is connected with vision is located at the back portion of the head and basilar migraine affects that particular portion. The artery that is affected supplies blood to the area in the back portion of the head and this is the place where the visual center of human beings is located. So any kind of problem and that area will automatically have an effect on the vision of the person. The other rare symptoms that are connected with basilar migraine are ringing in the ears, unconsciousness and jerky movement of the eyes.
Seriousness of Basilar Migraine
Basilar migraine is a serious type of migraine as it has drastic after effects that can lead to a stroke and also create the problem of aneurysms in the area which is affected by the attack. Surgery is required for aneurysms after a certain limit is reached as clipping of the artery becomes necessary due to the out pouching of the artery. Sometimes early surgery has to be done to patients who suffer from other neurological problems.
The basilar migraine symptoms mimic the symptoms of a stroke and so when the person goes for a checkup he has to undergo all the tests to rule out the danger of suffering from a stroke. Tests are also conducted to detect any possibility of seizures which can sometimes occur with the headache and the vertigo.
Once all the possibilities are ruled out the normal treatment for migraine is given but a person suffering from basilar migraine has to complete a course of treatment that is specially administered to these type of patients.
